At Dr. Aronovitz's Hair & Facial Plastics Institute, hair transplantation is a simple outpatient procedure. After several hours spent in the office you will be on your way to a new head of hair. Many patients can even go back to normal activity within a few days.
The Basics Most often the procedure is done with a local anesthetic used to numb the scalp in the areas of surgery. This can be done with local anesthesia alone, or in combination with a mild sedative like Valium. We also offer those with any additional anxiety the ability to have the procedure done with a slightly deeper sedation through an I.V.
In our modern, state of the art facility, we will retrieve hair for transplantation from what is known as the "Donor Area" at the back of the head. This hair is genetically different from hair on the rest of the head in that it doesn't respond to the hormones that cause hair loss, will maximize graft growth, and encourages the most natural results. The hair is removed and divided into follicles, which are the small organs that grow hair, and can produce anywhere from 1-5 hairs in each follicle.
Small openings are then created in the scalp where hair is needed and the follicles are transplanted. This hair does not change its genetic make-up and will grow just as it did in the back of the head.
State of the art microscopes allow for careful dissection of each delicate follicle necessary to perform a perfect restoration of your hair. The transplanted hairs typically fall out at day 7-10, but by about three months you will notice the new permanent hair begin to grow at a rate of about ½ inch per month. You are on track to a new head of hair!
